A Brief History of Blogging

The history of weblogs is closely linked to the origins of blogs and blogging. Today’s blogs are not the same as the original weblog. The very first weblog was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who also invented the World Wide Web. It’s important to note that the World Wide Web is different from the internet, which was once known as the “galactic network.” The internet existed before the creation of the web by Berners-Lee, who coined the term in the early 1990s. By that time, the internet had already been around for almost a decade, with intranet and other types of exclusive external networks developed in the 1960s.

While working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, Sir Berners-Lee created the first website, which served as a list of new websites. The term “weblog” originally referred to a log of the web. Early weblogs weren’t focused on content and were not like online journals or digital diaries. However, by the late 1990s, weblogs evolved into blogs and blogging, marking a clear distinction that would continue to grow, as we’ll explore here.
